NASA “Bare Metal” Shuttle Carrier 747 Released

by Greg Drawbaugh
April 21st, 2012

This Boeing 747-100 started life in September 1970 with American Airlines as N9668.  In July 1974 it was sold to NASA were it remains in service today.  NASA removed the American Airlines logo from the tail along with the N number and main titles.  NASA retained the red, white and blue side stripes.  The large side American logo was stripped and the metal was buffed clean.  The location of the American Airlines titles was still visible after being stripped.  By December 1974, 905 had the shuttle mounts added along with the new vertical fins on the stabilizers for the first SCA flight with the non-operational shuttle “Enterprise.”  This later version of 905 is the most unique with the added fuselage doublers and the mission markings denoting the flights.

This set is available in 1:200, 1:288 and 1:144 scales.

TWA Memories from Jon Proctor

by Greg Drawbaugh
April 12th, 2012

Here is a great article from my friend Jon Proctor’s website, just click on the photo to be linked.  Most know Jon Proctor as an aviation author and  former editor of Airliners Magazine, but not many of us know all he did when he worked for TWA and later Pan Am.  Jon’s photos are mind-blowing to see, and are only topped by the stories and events he witnessed first-hand.

Back Home and Filling Orders

by Greg Drawbaugh
April 8th, 2012

After a great trip to southern Arizona, we have returned home to Minnesota.  Shortly after returning, a long anticipated print run from our printer also arrived.  While there is still a good sized backlog waiting to be printed, we are pleased to be able to send out the majority of our oldest open orders with this shipment.  Please bear with us as we will keep filling orders just as quickly as we can.  We once again apologize for the longer than usual delay in filling some of our orders during the past six weeks.

Here a Ferruginous Hawk makes an impressive short-field landing I caught during my visit to the Desert Museum in Tucson.
