Lockheed C-5 Galaxy Decals Entering USAF service in 1969, the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy was the world’s largest aircraft until the development of the An-124 and An-225 by the Soviet Union in the 1980s. The C-5 remains the largest, and arguably the most valuable strategic airlift asset in the U.S. arsenal, even if not the most reliable. The aircraft is currently in service with two active-duty Airlift Wings, as well as five Air Force Reserve Wings, and three Air National Guard Wings.
