Seeking to expand its Pacific presence by starting service to smaller markets, Northwest Airlines placed an order for 18 Boeing 787-8s in May of 2005, with purchase rights for 50 more. The aircraft were to be delivered in Northwest’s metallic silver colors. Northwest has since been merged with Delta, and eventually, someday Delta will take delivery of the 787 but in Delta’s colors.
