World Airways at one time operated a large fleet of McDonnell Douglas MD-11 passenger and freighter aircraft. The passenger aircraft flew a variety of charter and ACMI wet-lease contracts. A large percentage of World’s business was flying for the U.S. Department of Defense, but the airline also provided lift for other airlines from around the globe. World’s Cargo operations were similar, centered around ACMI contracts for other companies, including Air Canada, Emery Worldwide, Etihad, Lufthansa, and Malaysian. Sadly, after several trips through Bankruptcy, World’s parent company managed to finally kill off the once proud airline, with World closing its doors suddenly on March 27, 2014.
