On August 5, 1989, Piedmont Airlines was formally merged into USAir. While most of the Piedmont fleet had been repainted into a transitional bare metal scheme in anticipation of the merger, nine 737-200s retained their full Piedmont colors. As a result, these aircraft operated for a time after the merger date with Piedmont stripes, but the new titles introduced by USAir for the combined airlines.
