In 1984, Pan American Airways adopted a modified color scheme for its aircraft featuring very large fuselage titles. In the years that followed, the “billboard” scheme was slowly applied to the existing fleet. Only three 747SPs received the new titles before the fleet was sold to United with the sale of Pan Am’s Pacific routes.
